scuppers

Hi all,
on my 215 (2006) there are two indentations on the deck, one each side just at the forward end of the lift up side seats, all they do is gather water and fish guts, does anyone know what they are there for ? is it for a draining scupper that the builders forgot to cut in? has anyone else got these, I asked a friend of mine who does fibreglass work if they could be filled in but he said they would look odd and stand out like a sore thumb. the water that gathers in them goes green over a while if they are not cleaned out.
Also in the cabin under the starboard bunk, the area is crying out for a locker like on the port side, looks like a waste of space to me that could be opened and made earn its keep, has anyone else done this or is there a reason why the starboard side is sealed, maybe reserve stability?
Thanks
Kerry

Seem to be having a few problems at the moment. Latest is that screen on my 5505 plotter won't light up. Everything is functioning as you can see the chart very faintly but it seems that the backlight bulb has failed. I have tried adjusting the brightness etc but it will not light up. Switched on the last time I was out and working fine until the next time I looked up at the screen and it was black. Anyone experienced this??

Asking for an electric outboard

Hi all:

A couple of days ago I had a mishap with my engine VW 100/5. Since I've changed my ship to have greater security in open seas, I'm a little disappointed by this fault which, according to the mechanic, has been real bad luck (with a little help of the “specialist”" who made the maintenance of pump impeller in the last servicing).

At about half mile to my marina, coming back of a trip of about 5 miles,  I heard a loud “clunk” in the motor department. The overheating light and the buzzer were activated simultaneously and, immediately, I stopped the engine. I started it again for few seconds to anchor in shallower water, I opened the engine and noticed that the belt nearest to the cockpit was loose and missing the pulley of the water pump. This pulley was below the (very warm) engine so, no chance to reposition it in place even with the right tools.

Fortunately,  I had a friend nearby fishing and he towed me to the port. He released me at the entrance of the marina mainly to save my pride after claiming that the VW engine was bulletproof. Only I started the engine 30 seconds to dock the boat in their berth.

Yesterday, we repositioned the pulley in place and the engine is working properly again without any symptoms of damage from overheating.

To avoid these situations, especially at night when fishing squids in calm waters, I  had the idea of putting an electric motor powered with the same batteries of the boat. I guess these engines are easier to carry on board, by weight and simplicity, and are less cumbersome than an equivalent petrol outboard.

I'm not fishing beyond 3-4 miles from my marina and at night the waters are usually calm. Normally I go out with friends who are fishing around in their respective boats so the situation, if engine shutdown, is not desperate but nobody likes to be towed if can be avoid.

These motors are widely used in sailing ships so that there is a very diverse market opportunity near. Experts recommend an engine with a thrust over 55lb. but nobody have experience on 20 feet diesel boats, only on sailing boats or small Zodiacs.

In September  I’ll have occasion to make some proofs with different powered electric engines in my 215 AS. I’ll inform about results. Meanwhile if somebody in the forum has experience with these engines I would appreciate any comment about.

I put a pair of links of these toys,

Also, a link to an old book published by FAO (author JDK Wilson) but with many interesting and valid explanations about boats and motors.

Hi All,
I would like to get a canopy deck cover complete with the supporting framework with windows, zip up sides and rear for an Arvor 215.
Does anyone have contact details for a manufacturer on the south coats that might be able to give a price, anywhere from Bournemouth to Brighton.

Nut size of engine mounts

I have a vibration in my boat when I exceed 2000 rpm. When the boat was out for antifouling the prop was taken away and balanced, on my last trip I hit a submerged log which put one blade out of line. There was a small amount of play in the cutlass bearing but this was  not considered enough to require replacing. I am planning to realign the engine, after 6 years the supports will surely have settled a little. releasing the half coupling should not be a problem. I would aim to get the 2 faces to less than 4thou gap .

My problem is that my 1/2inch drive socket set only goes up to 20mm. Buying individual sockets will not be expensive if I can identify which ones I need. Does any one know the sizes? The engine is a VW 5 cylinder 150hp variable vane turbo.

Any advice tips etc will be gratefully received.

A word of warning. Our other owners took the boat out on Tuesday, refuelled with 20l from can but put it in the rod holder instead of the fuel inlet. All went into compartment underneath then drained into bilge. Spent several hours with pump and detergent over the last two days getting it all out!!!!!!

250 black or white engine

Hi all,

I am selling my 230 07 to upgrade to a 250 and am wondering if anyone can help me decide with their experiences, whether its worth spending the extra money to buy one with the newer white engine rather then the black engine as I have heard some reports that the black engines can be troublesome.

And any other benefits between the newer & older models, also if anyone knows of anyone that wants to buy a 07 230 in Essex just being polished and antifouled so will be ready to go.

Thanks Russ.
